History

In March 2019, the country experienced devastating floods due to the Tropical Cyclone Idai which affected 17 districts mostly in the Southern Region including two major cities of Blantyre, and an estimated 975,000 Malawians. The disaster resulted in substantial damage to infrastructure and physical assets and led to changes in economic flows in both the public and private domains. The disaster had an estimated total effect of US$220.2 million where 72 and 28 percent damage and loss, respectively. Overall, considerable numbers of women affected by the floods were not able to engage in income-generating activities due to lack of opportunities, socio-cultural norms as well as loss of livelihood assets post disaster. This, therefore, asserted the need for specifically targeted recovery support for this group. In general, the disaster had a significant impact on people’s lives, deepening poverty; rendering many people homeless, jobless or without a livelihood, as well as vulnerable to food insecurity and diseases.

The Government of Malawi obtained a credit and grant from the International Development Association (IDA) through the crisis response window to implement the Malawi Resilience and Disaster Risk Management Project which is an additional financing to the Malawi Drought Recovery and Resilience Project (MDRRP), to continue supporting the recovery of livelihoods and infrastructure in both flood and drought affected areas, whilst strengthening capacity for flood and drought risk management. The additional financing specifically supports the up-scaling of the existing MDRRP activities to meet the 2019 post disaster needs through the adjustment of the original project activities as well adding new activities to address flood specific recovery needs following the Tropical Cyclone Idai which hit Malawi and caused severe flooding in the Southern and to a lesser extent, Central Region.
